In January 2024, Manchester’s Mayor Jay Ruais launched an Anti-Stigma Survey developed by the Addiction Policy Forum, designed to gauge residents’ comfort levels with individuals either actively experiencing or recovering from substance use disorder. The survey aimed to capture the current state of stigma within the city, with responses from 109 residents.
Building on this initiative, three team members from Makin’ It Happen attended the Anti-Stigma Initiative training in Washington, D.C., hosted by the Addiction Policy Forum in October. This two-day training marked the next phase in Manchester’s commitment to reducing stigma. Attendees gained a broader understanding of the national stigma landscape and explored Ohio’s pioneering anti-stigma campaign. By the end of the training, attendees were certified as trainers in “Responding to Addiction” and “enCompass”—two evidence-based programs developed by the Addiction Policy Forum.
Makin’ It Happen is excited to bring these newly acquired trainings to Manchester. These sessions will benefit caregivers and loved ones of individuals with substance use disorder, professionals in related fields, and community members eager to learn more about support and stigma reduction.
The three team members—Ashley, Kay, and Janelle—took full advantage of their time in the nation’s capital, combining intensive learning with a bit of sightseeing, making it a memorable and productive experience.
Looking ahead, the Makin’ It Happen team is committed to deepening its collaboration with the Manchester Health Department and Mayor’s Office to build on the progress of the Anti-Stigma Initiative. Together, we will work to implement community-wide strategies aimed at reducing stigma, increasing awareness, and promoting understanding around substance use disorder, through the tools and partnerships gained through the Addiction Policy Forum.
