The Resiliency Essentials team at Makin’ It Happen last year had the amazing opportunity to train the Physical Therapy students at Franklin Pierce University in Mental Health First Aid and Question, Persuade, and Refer (QPR). A total of 42 students were trained in these two suicide prevention curriculums to help better prepare them for clinicals. This year the team is going back again in September to train the next cohort of Physical Therapy students.
But there is more! We were asked to be part of the Community Engagement Service-Learning Project with a group of students. Over the semester, students were asked to choose a community partner to work with and create an intervention idea they can use within their community. This project helps the students put their educational skills into practice within the community. It is important for the students to expand their understanding and consider how as physical therapists they can work alongside community organizations. The students worked hard at planning what their intervention will look like and where in the community they will take it.

On Friday, July 24th the group of students took their “Fall Prevention Packets” to the local Manchester Senior Center. The Fall Prevention Packet labeled “Stay Strong, Stay Safe” gives a detailed guide on home safety checklists, how to stay active in your community, and 5 simple exercises that keep seniors active! They handed out DeTerra Bags, medication safety brochures, and a fall prevention brochure.

They distributed approximately 30 packets and left an additional 35 packets at the senior center for anyone who may have missed the tabling event. Makin’ It Happen is proud to have played a part in furthering community engagement and providing resources throughout different populations.
Want to team up? We’re always open to spreading the message of prevention and supporting others in doing the same.
